The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE), Tulsa District, has awarded a construction contract to repair the Kaw Dam Bridge near Ponca City, Oklahoma.
The contract focuses on repairing deteriorated bridge girders and restoring the structure’s reliability after inspections identified critical issues with the bridge’s support system.
The Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) will begin repair activities after construction materials arrive. Officials expect material deliveries in mid-August 2026, allowing repair work to move into the construction phase.
Bridge Closure Followed Structural Inspection
The USACE, Tulsa District, closed the Kaw Dam Bridge on November 7, 2025, after maintenance workers discovered advanced deterioration of bridge bearings during routine repair activities.
Bridge bearings play a critical role in supporting structural loads and allowing controlled movement caused by temperature changes, traffic loads, and other forces. Damage to these components can affect bridge performance and safety.
Following the closure, USACE teams completed inspections, developed repair plans, and moved the project through the contracting process.

“We recognize the bridge closure has affected residents and visitors who regularly travel across Kaw Dam,” Goffena said. “Our team has worked diligently to move this project from inspection and design to contract award, and we look forward to beginning work.”
The contract award marks a major milestone after months of engineering assessments and project preparation.
